What are the GCAA PPL theory exams?
To get a private pilot licence in the UAE you train at a GCAA-approved training organisation (ATO) and pass the theoretical knowledge examinations (TKE) set by the General Civil Aviation Authority. There are nine subjects, and you need 75% in each. Your ATO must recommend you before you sit them, and that recommendation is valid for 12 months.
The exam format
| Subjects | Air Law, Human Performance, Meteorology, Communications, Principles of Flight, Operational Procedures, Flight Performance and Planning, Aircraft General Knowledge, Navigation |
|---|---|
| Pass mark | 75% in each subject |
| Time allowed to pass all papers | 18 months |
| Re-sit limits | Failing one paper four times, or using six sittings, means starting all papers again |
| Validity | The theory pass is valid for 24 months for licence issue |
| Minimum age for the licence | 17 |
The GCAA does not publish the number of questions in each paper. Always check the current GCAA requirements and your ATO's briefing before booking.
What the exam covers
- Air law: rules of the air, right of way, VMC minima, light signals, transponder codes
- Human performance: hypoxia, disorientation, vision, heat and dehydration
- Meteorology, including dust, sand, haboobs, shamal and fog in the UAE
- Communications: phraseology, readbacks and emergency calls
- Principles of flight: lift, stalls, load factor, drag and stability
- Operational procedures: wake turbulence, fuel checks, runway markings
- Flight performance and planning: density altitude, crosswinds, mass and balance, fuel
- Aircraft general knowledge: pitot-static and gyro instruments, piston engines
- Navigation: the 1-in-60 rule, variation, VOR, charts and time, speed and distance
Free official resources, and what we add
The GCAA publishes the PPL requirements, and ICAO standards set the rules the syllabus is built on. There is no official GCAA practice question bank. Our 112 questions are original, grouped into the nine subjects, and every explanation names its source. Calculation questions on density altitude, crosswind, centre of gravity, fuel, glide range and the 1-in-60 rule show the full working.
How to prepare
- Study one subject at a time alongside your ATO ground school, and practise that subject here.
- Learn the ISA: 15 °C and 1013.25 hPa at sea level, about 2 °C cooler per 1,000 ft.
- Practise the standard sums until they are quick: pressure and density altitude, crosswind, CG and fuel.
- Pay extra attention to UAE weather: dust and sand codes, haboobs, the shamal and winter fog.
- Aim for well above 75% in each topic before you book that paper.
- Take timed mock exams to build speed.

What is the minimum age to hold a private pilot licence?
- 16 years
- 17 years
- 18 years
- 21 years
Answer: B, 17 years. The GCAA PPL requirements and ICAO Annex 1 set the minimum age for a private pilot licence at 17 years. Source: GCAA PPL Requirements; ICAO Annex 1, Personnel Licensing, 2.3.1.1.
Which is an early symptom of hypoxia that makes it dangerous?
- Sharp pain in the ears
- Shivering and cold hands
- A sense of well-being (euphoria) with impaired judgement
- Increased night vision
Answer: C, A sense of well-being (euphoria) with impaired judgement. Hypoxia often produces euphoria and impaired judgement before obvious symptoms, so pilots may not recognise it. Source: FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25), Chapter 17 (Aeromedical Factors).
Using the ISA lapse rate of 2 °C per 1,000 ft, what is the ISA temperature at 6,000 ft?
- +9 °C
- +3 °C
- −3 °C
- +15 °C
Answer: B, +3 °C. Working: 15 − (2 × 6) = 15 − 12 = +3 °C. Source: ICAO Doc 7488, Manual of the ICAO Standard Atmosphere.
